Slip collars / leads are NOT cruel.
If you’ve ever watched someone use a slip lead and thought “that looks harsh,” I totally get why you’d wonder. But it’s simply an uneducated response. This tool is like a steering wheel for your dog. It’s a clear, gentle guidance tool that helps your dog understand exactly what you’re asking for, without mixed signals.
Here’s why it can actually be more humane than a standard flat collar:
A flat collar sits right on the sensitive neck and throat area. When your dog pulls, which almost every pup does while learning, constant pressure presses directly on their windpipe can strain their neck muscles, and even cause long-term damage over time. A properly fitted, correctly used slip lead works differently: it tightens only briefly to get your dog’s attention, then loosens straight away. It’s a quick “hey, this way” rather than a never-ending tug on their neck. It also sits higher up, near the base of the skull where there are fewer delicate structures, so pressure is far safer and more comfortable.
And yes, there are plenty of cases where a harness is the perfect choice! For dogs with neck issues, brachycephalic breeds, or when you’re just heading out for a casual stroll, my go-to harness is wonderful: it spreads weight evenly across the chest and shoulders, puts zero strain on the neck, and keeps your pup comfy and secure.
They’re not “either/or”, they’re different tools for different jobs! When you’re working on loose-lead walking, recall, or basic training, a slip lead gives you clear, kind communication that helps your dog learn faster, with less stress on both of you.
